CHAPTER 6: STRATEGIC LOCATION AND CITY PLAN- CONNECTING THE ELDERLY

STRATEGIC LOCATION- ELDERLY CONNECTIVITY AT THE SCALE OF THE CITY

CITY STRATEGY: CONNECTING ELDERLY VILLAGES TO THE FOUNDATION THROUGH SYSTEMS OF MOVEMENT

CITY STRATEGY CONCEPT COLLAGE SYSTEMS OF MOVEMENT CONNECTING THE ELDERLY TO THE BIMINI  BASIN

This collage depicts the city strategy that will connect the elderly. The collage depicts elderly living villages in the background with tram and canal systems transporting the elderly. The canal and tram system will bring the elderly to and from elderly living villages to the elderly foundation at the Bimini Basin

UTILISING PRINCIPLES FROM PLACEMAKING TASKS

During placemaking tasks undertaken in chapter 2, we looked at systems of movement. Two images we created during this stage have become particularly insightful in connecting the elderly from the elderly villages to the Bamimi Basin. The first photomontage looked at creating public transport links integrated into the wide streets of Cape Coral. The second looked at creating a continuous canal system of movement. These inspired me to begin developing a tram system, as well as a canal link, bringing the elderly to the foundation.

CITY STRATEGY- TRAM LINK CONNECTING ELDERLY VILLAGES TO THE FOUNDATION

PROPOSED TRAM ROUTE STOPS AT ELDERLY VILLAGES AND TRANSPORTS ELDERLY TO AND FROM THE FOUNDATION

The tram system follows the major roads of the city, which run close to almost all elderly villages / residences in the city. The middle islands of the main roads vary from 5-6m and could house shelters, as seen in below sketches, with two way tram lanes either side replacing the inner lane of the existing road. This tram system would be used by the elderly to transport to and from the elderly foundation, therefore, tram stops were strategically located close to major elderly villages.

THE NEED FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT:

1/5 elderly residents in Cape Coral have no access to a car or personal vehicle. The city is not suitable for walking due to spread-out nature of the city and the immense Florida heat. The elderly require some form of public transport to be introduced.

CITY STRATEGY- CANAL LINK ALLOWING FOR RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION TO THE ELDERLY DURING THE REBUILD

CONNECTING THE ELDERLY VIA CANAL

The tram system is used for transporting the elderly to and from the foundation, whereas the proposed canal system would be used for transporting resources to the elderly. As stated earlier, many elderly residents rely on food stamps and during the period after hurricanes, this increases. The canal system will be used to transport food, water etc from the elderly foundation to elderly villages, homes etc.
