CHAPTER 4: THE ELDERLY- VULNERABLE THROUGHOUT THE DESTRUCTION / REBUILD CYCLE
THE ELDERLY POPULATION OF CAPE CORAL
A HIGH PROPORTION OF ELDERLY RESIDENTS
This sheet shows general research on Cape Coral’s large ageing population. The elderly people in the city are most vulnerable to the destruction / rebuild cycle. The statistics from this page are from the US Census accessed via : https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/capecoralcityflorida.
ELDERLY LIVING FACILITIES
Across the city, the wealthier elderly residents have the opportunity to live in communal over 55 villages and care homes. Less wealthy elderly people have to rely on at-home care and often live alone. This distribution of the elderly will be crucial in the strategic location of the site in Chapter 6.
ISSUES THE ELDERLY FACE DURING KEY STAGES OF THE DESTRUCTION / REBUILD CYCLE
ISSUES THE AGING POPULATION FACES DURING VARYING STAGES OF THE DESTRUCTION / REBUILD CYCLE
The collages show the three stages of the hurricane cycle (normal Life, Destruction, and Rebuild) and news headlines outlining the issues that elderly people face during these stages. The elderly community are the most vulnerable in all stages. This provides the basis for the project program- how can we help the elderly during these stages by reducing the issues that they face?
ADRESSING THE ELDERLY’S NEEDS AT KEY STAGES OF THE DESTRUCTION / REBUILD CYCLE
WHAT COULD BE PROVIDED FOR THE ELDERLY DURING KEY STAGES OF THE DESTRUCTION / REBUILD CYCLE?
Having looked at the issues that the elderly face at the three main stages of the destruction /rebuild cycle, I looked at what could be provided at these stages to reduce the issues they face. The below sketches outline possible services/events that could help the elderly population throughout the destruction / rebuild cycle. This is the start of developing a program that can adjust to the changing needs of the elderly.
