CHAPTER 2: CONCEPTUAL PLACEMAKING
PLACEMAKING GROUPWORK INTRODUCTION
EXERCISE OUTLINE
The exercise began in groups of two, where we were given a small section of Cape Coral. We then studied the below public spaces and systems of movements, from other cities, and collected images. From here we began comparing the scales of our small Cape Coral site to the spaces below. We then looked at photo montaging elements from the studied spaces onto Cape coral to explore how Cape Coral could be improved conceptually. From this, we then joined into a larger group and applied principles from the studies to a larger site, creating a conceptual master plan.
Task Purpose: the task helped us begin to look at the scale of the city and the possibilities for connections and public spaces in a conceptual manner. Some of the photomontages and master plans have influenced decisions I make later in the portfolio.
PUBLIC SPACE / SYSTEMS OF MOVEMENT EXERCISE PROCESS
GROUP EXERCISE SITE AND PROCESS (SAM AND KATE)
For this exercise, we were given the below site, which contains the street, Cape Coral Parkway, through to the sea. The aim of this task was to look at public spaces and systems of movement from other cities, e.g. Turia River Park, and see how aspects from them could be applied to our site to create attractive spaces. The process we took was split into three main stages: Readings, image collection and scale comparison. These stages lead up to photo montages (see next page)
PHOTOMONTAGE OUTCOME
STAGE 4: PHOTOMONTAGING (EXCERCISE OUTCOME)
The outcome for this excercise was a series of photomontages that show how ideas from researched public spaces and systems of movement could be implemented into our site to create a sense of place. By first overlaying scaled images from other cities, we realised the size of some voids within our site was bigger than we thought. Large volumes of our site were left empty. We looked at how to connect these using walkways and public transport. We also looked at how these voids could become parks/public squares.
CONCEPTUAL PLACEMAKING THROUGH PUBLIC SPACE AND SYSTEMS OF MOVEMENT
GROUP EXERCISE OUTLINE (SAM, HAZEL, DARSHAN, ELLA, CALLUM AND KATE)
As a bigger group, we were then given a larger site, which ran from coast to coast along Cape Coral Parkway. We were tasked to implement systems of movement and public spaces into the site. We looked at creating a continous canal system of movement with floating public spaces.
